It’s no doubt that I am extremely in love with the city that I live in – Yallingup, Western Australia. It’s a far cry away from where I grew up, and coming off the back of living deep in the city life in Bondi for 8 years I was a little worried that I’d get bored in a small coastal town. Its been quite the contrast actually. This place thrives with adventure. Things to see, places to travel to and amazing fine and food. Its such a dream to live within a wine country and I’m so lucky to be able to call this amazing town home.
Here are my tips to anyone coming to visit the area; what to eat, where to stay and what to see.
I often get a lot of friends coming to visit from the east coast and this is the first place i’ll recommend for them to stay. Empire Retreat Yallingup is a gorgeous boutique hotel situated in the middle of Yallingup. Close enough to the town so everything is easily accessible but its located on a gorgeous bit of property that makes you feel like you are secluded and away from the real world. This family run business also run their own chain of homewares stores which are quite well known in Western Australia so the interiors of the retreat are like something straight out of a luxury home magazine. Best part about it is you can purchase whatever you see, and customers from the retreat get a discount at the homewares stores which gives you a great excuse to get a couple of items to remind you of your trip. Also, be sure to check out their spa for a divine massage or facial treatment and enjoy the breakfast which is included when you stay!
I could go on for hours on this topic, one that is very close to my heart – FOOD! The food and wine is a huge tourism drawcard to this town. There are hundred of wineries right on our doorstep! One of our all time favourite wineries is Aravina Estate. Aravina is set on lush rolling green hills covered with grape vines. Sit on the balcony and wine and dine while you are overlooking a stunning dam and their beautiful gardens. The food is absolutely top notch, you wont be disappointed with an ever-changing seasonal menu. It is a real tastebud sensation and pairing lunch with their award wining wines is a guaranteed way to make this one for the memory books.
Another favourite place to eat and drink is Black Brewing Co. Located on Caves rd its a great place to go with a large group. Black Brewing is one of the larger venues in the region with beautiful industrial vibes to its interiors. Beer, Wine and Spirits – they do it all so they tick all of the boxes and wont leave anyone unsatisfied. Theres also a playground for the little ones, so they can run riot while mum and dad get a second to enjoy their drinks. I may be biased, but they also brew the worlds best beer HONEST ALE which may or may not be the new venture of my partner Taj. Definitely a must try if you are in the region.
You can’t forget the world’s best drink… Coffee! My go-to place for coffee is a cafe in Dunsborough called Merchant and Maker. Perfect for the caffeine addicted just like myself. With a cabinet full of breaky and lunch to go at your fingertips and also a boutique grocer attached its the perfect spot to sit down in the sunshine and catch up with friends and then pick up some nibbles for a cheese platter in the afternoon, perfection!
One of my favourite place and always a crowd favourite when taking my first time to the area friend is the Injidup Spa. The natural rock formation right next to the ocean creates a waterfall that runs into a small salt water rock pool. It’s the most incredible thing to see and the perfect spot to lay out on a hot summer’s day. Tip: Consider leaving the kids at home as it can be quite dangerous and you have to climb and scale many rocks to get there.
